8-9 May: Vesakh at Samatha Centre

Programme for Vesakh at the Manchester Centre for Buddhist meditation, 19-21 High Lane, Chorlton

from Friday May 8th 2009

8pm - a gathering which will include practice, chanting and a Dhamma talk.

You are welcome to bring flowers, candles, incense and food to share and to follow the custom at the Full Moon and wear something that is white.

10pm – break

From 11pm on Friday evening till 6am on Saturday morning there will be at least 2 (and sometimes many more) people chanting.

A lot of the chanting will be from the Chanting book and we hope to have a ‘programme’ to make it easier for people to join in.

A small number of people will have agreed to chant for a 1 hour period through the night so that the chanting can carry on without a break.

Everyone else can also chant – as much or as little as they like, and also practice, listen, chat, snooze, sleep . . . .

The upstairs Shrine room and the End Hall will also be kept for people to sleep so do bring a sleeping bag or similar. It’s also fine to sleep in the main Shrine Hall.

Starting at 5am the Dhammacakkhvattana sutta (Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma – the first teaching given by the Buddha following his enlightenment) will be chanted through dawn and the Full Moon followed by chanting and offering of the Puja. There will then be well earned bacon/veg butties as a celebratory breakfast!

Message from Tzu Chi

My name is Lina Gan. I got your e mails from MUBS website. Well done for the good work you have done to propagate Buddha's teachings in Manchester.

I would like to introduce Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation to you. Master Cheng Yen established Tzu Chi Foundation 42 years ago in Hua Lian, Taiwan. .During her renunciation 42 yrs ago , she made vows not to receive any public offerings and to be independent , not organising any traditional chanting sessions and not to have any diciples. Tzu Chi is also a charitable organization that trancends all borders , races and religions. It is an organization for spiritual cultivation by adopting an action-orientated approach and reaching out to anyone who needs help.Currently , there are 8 major projects which has been carried out all over the world : Charity, Medical,Education, Culture, Bone Marrow Register,International Relief , Community volunteers and Environment Protection. Please visit our website www.tzuchi.org.

Tzu Chi Manchester Branch is still in it's infant stage. We hope to run study group and voluntary activities locally. In order to do this , we will need local volunteers. Master Cheng Yen says, we should repay to the community where we live in since we earn or learn from them.

"Say good words, have good thoughts and do good deeds" still thoughts.

May every living being be free from mental and physical sufferings.

With Metta ,

Lina :)
